Mark “Buggs” Arico / Montana

There are surfboard collectors, and then there are people like Buggs who have made it their mission to preserve historic boards and share the stoke via surfboardline.com.

Who are you? Where are you living?
I’m Buggs. I split my time between Montana and Mexico.

When and how did you start collecting?
It was over 20 years ago, but the spark really came as a young grom in the late ’70s and early ’80s. My first collectible board was a Channel Islands Al Merrick shaped for Tom Curren. That kicked off the bug around the ’90s.

Which was the first board of your collection?
As I mentioned, the first standout collectible was that Tom Curren Channel Islands board. It was an Al Merrick shape from the late ’80s or early ’90s.

How many boards do you have?
It’s hard to pin down because I ride many of them. At the peak, I had about 400. I’ve since passed many on to friends and fellow collectors – sharing the torch.

Which is now your most preferred board?
I can’t pick one – they all have something special. Some intrigue me to ride, others are pure art, and some are innovative templates. Each is unique from a different lens.

Are you surfing your vintage boards?
Yes, I love riding them! Some surf better than others, but I enjoy twin fins, Bonzers, early V-bottoms – even if they ride weird – and of course vintage longboards for a glide.

Which one do you like to surf most?
I’d say the twin fins. Spending time in Mexico on right-hand points, twins just fit those waves beautifully.

Who is your favorite surfer from the 60’s-90’s and why?
I can’t pick just one. As a grom, Rabbit Bartholomew was huge for me. Over time, legends like Lopez, Buttons, Bertlemann, Curren, Weber, and more all left a mark – whether for style, performance, or innovation.

Last words:
Thanks for the opportunity! Surfboard collecting is a unique niche. You need space to showcase them, but even in my 60s, I’m passionate about design, art, and culture. I’m working on a new project – so stay tuned – and thanks again!
