Greg Webber / Avalon

Over the past 50 years, Greg Webber has experimented with unorthodox shapes, including full concave bottoms in the early 1990s when other shapers were still using the V – on such a Webber surfboard, Shane Herring beat Kelly Slater…

Who are you? Where are you living/surfing/shaping?
Greg Webber, Avalon, hardly surfing these days, too many sharks, shaping in Brookvale.

When and how did you start surfing?
1968 at Currumbin when our father bought us EPS coolites.

When and how did you start shaping?
1970 re-shaping EPS coolites.

Do you remember the first board you shaped? How was it?
Yes, tried to copy top shapers at the time, Terry Fitzgerald and Geoff McCoy. Turned out to look pretty close to what their boards were like. Mother was a sculptor so might have got some of her genes there. I painted it and put in a masonite fin. Snapped after second wave since i’d shaped it too thin.

Which surfer had the biggest impact on your shaping?
Michael Peterson.

Which is the best board you have ever shaped back in the days? Who for?
First full concave for myself in 1986.

Which was the most important era for you?
1992 when Shane Herring beat Kelly Slater at the Coke contest at Narrabeen on a full concave while all other surfers in the event were on Vee bottoms.

Who is your favorite surfer from the 60’s-90’s and why?
Michael Peterson, so radical.

Who is your favorite shaper from the 60’s-90’s and why?
Bob McTavish, so radical.
