Rick Pinard / San Diego

Since 20 years Rick Pinard from San Diego is collecting vintage surfboards and as you can see, he has a respectable collection now. Here he reveals us how it all starts…

Who are you? Where are you living?
Rick Pinard living in San Diego, OG from Florida.

When and how did you start collecting?
Only 20 years ago, surfing 40 years ago.

Which was the first board of your collection?
1978 Fox Surfboard twin fin.

How many boards do you have?
Not sure maybe 30.

Which is now your most preferred board?
My favorite is my 1978 Yater twin fin, never seen another on like it, restore to protection. 1983 OG Richie Collins Wave Tools board.

Are you surfing your vintage boards?
Yes, sometimes…

Which one do you like to surf most?
Older 80s transition Hansen 50/50

Who is your favorite surfer from the 60’s-90’s and why?
1960’s: Lance Carson style or David NU best nose rider of all time.
1970’s: Gerry Lopez & Rell Sun, also MR & Shaun Tomson.
1980’s: Tom Curren style like no other. Kelly Slater my hometown hero: I grew up watching Kelly win 11 world titles the Best of All-time. Richie Collins raw approach to surfing; Radical…..
1990’s: Joel Tudor, his surfing from Cardiff to pipe just amazing surfer, style. Devon Howard local style master. One of my best friends Danny Trickey, not a pro surfer just the guy having the most fun. Look up to him more than any pro surfer, the nicest guy you’ll ever meet, a man of GOD. Stoked on life.

Who is your favorite shaper from the 60’s-90’s and why?
1960’s: Gordon Smith, Dewey Weber, Rick, Greg Noll, Bing, Takayama – All of these shaper were beyond there time, especially Bing.
1970’s: Gerry Lopez , Dick Brewer, Both are master craftsman that understood flow and clean lines.  1980’s: Lance Collins Wave Tools: most interesting shaper ever. Rusty: Local hero in San Diego always took the time to tell me what I need to be riding. I got all the Team boards in the 90s, Taylor Knox, Occy, Mike Parson, list goes on… Tim Bessell: amazing gun shaper, spend a lot of time in Hawaii over 50k boards shaped. Nice guy too. Al Merrick – is there a greater short board shaper. I can answer that NO. Peter Schroff: beyond his time!!

Last words:
Over the last 40 years of surfing/20 years of collecting, I have meet some of the most interesting people along the way one thing in common the Love of the ocean and the crafts that are ridden on them.
